The mystery began when Kameroun Mares was traveling to California and her Siberian husky, Semper Fidelis, which means “always faithful” went missing while she was gone. Kameroun and her roommate searched everywhere for Semper but it was as though he disappeared.
They searched neighborhoods, animal shelters, put up signs, and looked everywhere that they could think of. With no luck, Mares, who suffered from acute lymphoblastic leukemia, was heartbroken that she could not find her dog that she got as a puppy after her diagnosis in 2013.
Determined to find Semper, Mares hired a private investigator named Ana Campos. As Campos began her investigation, someone suggested to Mares that she again check the record on her pup’s AKC Reunite chip.
She checked the chip and sure enough, got her first clue. She discovered on April 11, 2016, that a woman added her name to Semper’s AKC chip. From there, she uncovered that a person sold her dog off of Craigslist for $200.
After that, Campos uncovered a very shocking clue. According to her, it was Mare’s roommate who sold Semper, she reported:
“He was stolen and sold by her roommate 2 1/2 years ago,” Campos wrote on Facebook. “She was told he was lost on April 30, 2016. But on April 11, 2016 the buyer added their name to his AKC Reunite ‘registered chip’. They registered this registered chip on Petkey pets instead. Petkey pets did not bother to see if he was chipped already.”
Armed with the knowledge of who had purchased her stolen dog, Mares took the person who purchased him to court. Thankfully the judge ruled in her favor and Semper was returned to her two and a half years after he went missing.
Mares said, “I see him as an extension of myself and my heart,” Mares said. “I am glad I have him back in my arms.”
