One Belarusian army soldier, Pyotr Pankratau, is one such person. When he found a helpless baby squirrel on the brink of death, he quickly took the baby in and nursed it back to health using milk and a syringe.
Pyotr was in the right place at the right time and when the squirrel needed rescuing, and being a true soldier, he was there to serve. The squirrel lived and that was just the beginning of their adventures together.
When Pyotr left the Army, he brought the adorable squirrel he named Masik with him. Masik and Pyotr were inseparable so when he decided to take a job driving a taxi, it was a natural fit that his fuzzy tailed friend would accompany him. He said,
“I took him with me everywhere. In the army, everywhere. So he got used to this. Masik has a standard route at home, too – eating, then sleeping, from the kitchen to either under the blanket or to the wardrobe. He likes to sleep with me, close to my neck. He is very independent. There are no better animals.”
Before becoming an assistant taxi driver, Masik had a chance to live a normal squirrel life but chose to say with his human best friend:
“He ran away once, but I came up to the tree and he returned. Recently, I put him on a tree, and he was totally frightened and trembled all over.”
Pyotr doesn’t tell all his passengers that he has a cute squirrel riding along in the taxi. But he does carefully show him to the children because they love Masik so much and the squirrel loves them, too.
“I don’t show him to everyone. I mean, what’s the point? Why disturbing him all the time? I show him to kids. However, I watch him constantly.”
Masik is happy riding in the taxi and is the cutest taxi mascot ever. His cute little ears stand at attention as he watches the world pass by. He is also very content cozied up in his little squirrel blanket or napping on his blue squirrel bed.
We would love to take a ride just to spend some time with Masik, wouldn’t you?
Please share his story with your family and friends.
